JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Land Stewardship Intern
LOCATION: Wilmot, Ohio (15 miles west of Canton)
DURATION: Spring/Summer 2006 (This is flexible depending on intern’s schedule)
CLOSING DATE: Until Filled (We will begin reviewing resumes in mid March)
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Land Stewardship Intern will work directly with the Land Stewardship Director and volunteer Land Stewards to carry out land management duties on all Wilderness Center owned properties, monitor conservation easement compliance, and assist in the creation of site management plans for satellite properties. Approximately 3/4 of his/her time will be spent working outdoors.
DUTIES:
- Conduct invasive plant control and removal using hand and power tools as well as herbicides.
- Conduct site restoration including trash cleanup, removal of old fences, vegetation control, etc.
- Conduct biological monitoring / inventories of rare species and invasive species. Document monitoring sites with handheld GPS and input data in existing database.
- Carry out maintenance of hiking trails and footbridges.
- Assist with grounds upkeep as needed.
- Conduct stewardship monitoring of conservation easements.
- Collect data for the preparation of site management plans.
- Carry out other duties as assigned by the Land Stewardship Director.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Background or interest in natural resources / natural areas management. Preferences will be given to individuals with a Bachelor’s degree or are currently enrolled.
- Ability to work independently and responsibly with minimal supervision. Ability to cooperatively with a variety of volunteers and staff.
- Ability to work outdoors for long periods of time under adverse conditions (hot weather, insects, thorns, steep terrain, etc.).
- Ability to operate (or learn to operate) various hand and power tools as well as handheld or backpack herbicide sprayers.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. Ability to walk steep rugged terrain without trails.
- Working knowledge of computers. Preference will be given to experience with GPS/GIS technology. Ability to keep detailed records and data.
- Willing to use own vehicle for travel (will be reimbursed for mileage). Must have current driver’s license and personal vehicle.
- Willing to work evenings and weekends. Our normal work hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm.
CONPENSATION:
Compensation will be $8 – $10 per hour depending upon experience.
