Teacher Boxes

  When classes visit TWC, most teachers sign up for one (or more) program, which takes 45 minutes to 2 hours. Many plan additional lessons—great! But, if you would like a little help, we offer Teacher Boxes!

   Each Teacher Box has a variety of activities for you to lead with a class. The boxes include complete activity descriptions, directions, and supplies, as well as identification guides and a story book.

Dock Box-Examine a snapping turtle shell. Hike to the dock, count turtles for our informal survey, and feed the fish and geese. Includes Animals of Wilderness Lake (notebook), Golden Guide: Pond Life, and Beaver Stream (story book).

Planet Packet-Use a measuring wheel and our planet models to make a scale model of the solar system on the Pond Trail. Includes Solar System Walk Guide (notebook), Golden Guide: Planets, and Louis and the Night Sky (story book). 

Pond Pack-Walk to the pond, count frogs, and record the information. Scoop up some pond water, then identify the creatures you find. Includes Animals of Wilderness Pond (notebook), Golden Guide: Pond Life, and Fish is Fish (story book).

Rock Box-Use clues to figure out types of rocks, make a rubbing of your favorite rocks, and break open a geode to take back to school. Older students read about and discusses the basic kinds of rocks, then figure out which are which. Includes Rock Walk Guide, Golden Guide: Rocks and Minerals, and Everybody Needs a Rock (story book).

Sun Sack-Find the time OR  find north on 2 different sundials. Use a prism and a Rainbow Bouncer to see a spectrum and use your hand as a sundial. Includes Sunflower House (story book), Golden Guide: Sky Observer’s Guide, and Sunshine Makes the Seasons.

   One box is free for classes attending a School Program at TWC! ($20 fee for groups not attending our School Programs.) Of course, we'll charge you if equipment is missing or broken, Reserve your Teacher Box when you register or by phone with anyone in the Education Department at 877-359-5235.
