Gordon T. Maupin
Gordon is half Ozark Hillbilly and half prairie sodbuster with a touch of Cherokee.
He studied biology and plant ecology at Missouri State University earning bachelors and masters degrees.
Before coming to The Wilderness Center, he worked for the Missouri Department of Conservation and for the Oklahoma Wildlife Department.
Executive Director of The Wilderness Center (TWC) announced his retirement effective
February, 28, 2014.
Maupin has spent the past 32 years as TWC’s Executive Director. He will leave a legacy of significant accomplishments during his tenure at TWC.
Maupin became the Executive Director of The Wilderness Center in 1981. During his career at TWC, he led the nonprofit nature center through growth and constant change from a staff of three to a staff of fourteen with land conservation holdings spanning the region. Under Maupin’s leadership, TWC has more than doubled its fee ownership land holdings and acquired numerous conservation easements.
Maupin has been an agent of innovation at The Wilderness Center. TWC expanded its mission to include land conservancy work.
Maupin’s retirement in 2014 will coincide with The Wilderness Center’s 50th Anniversary.
