Excavation of the Martins Creek Mastodon

Dr. Nigel Brush, Assistant Professor of Geology at Ashland University, will present a lecture on his work at the Martins Creek Mastodon Site near Berlin in Holmes County. In 1993, he and his students from the University of Akron excavated the remains of a mastodon that had been butchered by Paleo-Indian hunters during the Ice Age. Subsequent analysis of the bones and artifacts resulted in the identification of cut-marks on the bones, as well as blood residue and edge-wear on the flint flakes.

The Club takes frequent field trips such as this one to Gorge Metro Park to see the falls of the Cuyahoga River
