CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!
TWC is seeking volunteers to help with our Tree-of-Life planting on Saturday, April 24th. Celebrate Earth Day by helping us plant trees dedicated during 2019 and 2020. We will meet at 9:00 am. Squirrels need their vegetables too!
Squirrel Corn is closely related to a garden favorite, Bleeding Heart, and both plants have uniquely shaped flowers that bloom from April to May. Squirrel Corn’s roots have nodules that resemble little corn on the cob kernels, hence its name. This plant’s primary pollinators are queen bumblebees because only queen bees are strong enough to prey open their unique petals to get to the nectar and pollen. True to their name, Squirrel Corn plants can also attract squirrels and other small rodents like mice and chipmunks when they bloom!

Do you want some lox, next to a fox, near some Wild Blue Phlox?
Wild Blue Phlox is a fragrant perennial plant found across the Midwest in woods and fields. This charismatic delicate plant has charming small flowers that look like the quintessential cartoon flower. In this plant’s eastern range, petals are notched, but petals are wider and not notched in the plant’s western range. Wild Blue Phlox provides many ecosystem services to other organisms such as rabbits, voles, and other small mammals that eat the roots and insect pollinators such as butterflies and bees that drink up the nectar.
