Sometimes quite sizable, as seen here, the Eastern garter snake is our most common snake in Ohio. 🐍
A shy creature, it feeds upon earthworms, frogs, fish, and other prey that it can swallow without first constricting. Its main defense is not to bite, but to squirt foul- smelling musk and excretions upon its attacker, as shown in this photo. ... See MoreSee Less

Moon, Mars and Venus
On Sunday, June 13, by 9:30p.m. or better yet 10:00p.m. look to the west and you will see the thin waxing crescent of a three-day old Moon over the red planet Mars. If you have binoculars both should be in your field of view. Just to the North and lower in the sky you will see the bright planet Venus. Venus will set about 10:30p.m. and Mars will set about an hour later at 11:30p.m. Both planets will be in the early evening sky throughout June. As each night goes by the two will appear to be getting closer as Mars is sinking toward the setting Sun and Venus is moving up in the sky, away from the Sun.
