In truth, the ultimate playground is still the great outdoors, but unfortunately it’s unfamiliar territory for many of today’s children. The Wilderness Center (TWC) is seeking to connect local children with nature through the addition of a nature playscape. Unlike traditional playgrounds made of plastic and metal, nature playscapes use natural materials like streams, plants, boulders, logs, earth mounds and the like to provide a highly creative, interactive play experience – an experience designed to build healthier bodies and minds and grow a future generation of nature lovers.
“There has been an increased interest in connecting with nature since more and more studies have demonstrated the positive effects that nature play can have on children’s physical and mental health” says Jeff Corney, executive director of The Wilderness Center. “At a time when childhood obesity and inactivity have become critical national issues of concern and environmental experts have begun to call the sustainability of our way of life into question, it has never been more imperative to get our kids outside.”
TWC thanks G & S Titanium, Heinz North America, Enviroscapes and the other generous contributors for their unique and valuable gift to the community. TWC is also grateful to the team of talented and hard-working volunteers for the planning and heavy lifting that was needed to make this exciting new project possible.
